Season 2012/13 comes to a close

Just as the season kicked off with a flurry of contests, the season closed in a similar fashion. Whilst most people were sceptical of the forecast, winds were lighter than expected and the swell (although super peaky) wasn't too bad for most of the day before becoming smaller in the afternoon. With one of the better days of weather seen on a weekend in months, the vibe at the contest was super fun and it was great to see people hanging around the beach to help judge, etc. There was also a major increase in the number of judges for this contest, so thanks to all of those who helped out.

We had a pretty jam packed day as we needed to run a lot of finals that we had not previously run in certain divisions due to other events running on the same day as ours, but it all ran very smoothly thanks to the help of Lachy and Tim. Again, there was some great surfing, heightened by the close ranking of division aggregates. Most notable, was the battle for the open title, of which 5 people were in contention for. The grommets and cadets were really impressive on the right hand rip bowls on the other side of the main contest bank as well. Results withheld until Presentation Night (15th June in Mornington).

A working bee and Supergrom presentation was held the next day at the club, so thanks to everyone who came and lent a hand/showed their support. A big thanks goes out to Gus and Robbo for organising funding for us to receive thousands of new plants for the clubhouse property - great work guys.

Overall, it was a great season with some of the better waves we have had in recent years (despite the fact 4 of 5 contests were on lefts!). Thinking back to Gunnawatu, the right hand bowls off the rocks at second carpark and last weekends tubs at first carpark showed that the Committee is doing a great job of working together to ensure that we get the best waves possible throughout the season. It isn't as easy as it sounds, especially considering our limitations regarding what weekends are actually available over the warmer months.

There are a lot of people to thank this year, but foremost Ads deserves a huge thanks and pat on the back for his work this year as President. His motivation and enthusiasm is infectious and it's great to be led by someone like him. A younger president is something the club has embraced since the days of Lachy and Ryan, so it is good to see this trend continuing as we also retain our focus on the old mates of the club (we haven't forgotten you guys). Others I would like to thank include Lachy, Tim, Rod Barber, all General Committee members, Wade for judging a stack of heats, Harley Kingston, Dos and Ross for their support in the contest tent when things get stressful, Gangers on the BBQ and all of the old mates who keep showing up every year. It was also good to see those such as Hydey get back down to the contests this year and assert his authority in the water over some of the younger grommets. Finally, to all of the new members, young and old, thanks for joining the club and hopefully you will stick around next year.

I will be handing over Contest Director duties to someone else next season, so if anyone is keen or has any questions, feel free to speak with myself or anyone from the General Committee.

Cheers, Luke Chalmers.
