Contest Director's Reports

December 2011 / Season 2011/12
PSC COMP 2 : A DAY FOR ALL CONDITIONS & NEW WINNERS!

After a couple of stormy induced delays we finally ran the 2nd club comp for the 2011/2012 contest year.

Conditions started almost perfectly - 3 to 4 foot, straight offshore, partly sunny - just unfortunately the banks were not great!!

With looming storms and onshores in the afternoon we chose first carpark due to the availability to 2 to 3 banks to get the contest done in record time...

Unfortunately conditions deteriorated substantially just before the open final with strong cross/onshore winds and rain. It was clearly going to be testing and was interesting to see who wanted it most. Josh Hallam who had been a standout all day took the win in his first open final with some aggressive vertical surfing and good wave selection. Josh has been due for a good result and it was great to see him take the win. Liam Jolly racked up his second second for the year with some aggressive backhand floaters and snaps while Angus Forrest and Caiden could not find the open faces and sections they had torn apart all day to come in third and fourth respectively. In addition to our finalists, other standout surfers for the day included Adam Morris, Tim Dexter, Lachy MacDonald and Jack Winter. After two comps the race for club champion hots up with Liam Jolly sitting on top of the rankings, closely followed by Caiden and Josh

In the Women's and Girl's finals Matilda McLennan returning from a successful Aussie titles campaign surfed brilliantly with some strong carving backhands snaps to win both divisions while Tabby Vockler continued to show dramatic improvement to achieve second in both divisions. Vee came in third in the Women's final and Bella Ford coming in third in the girls final. The standard of surfing was awesome to watch and the many hours the girls are clocking up in the surf is really starting to shine through. In the aggregates, for the Women Tabby is currently in front with two seconds, closely followed by Matilda and Vee while Matilda has a strong lead in Girls with Tabby in second and Bella in third

In the Junior boys final Grant Williams took home a strong victory with some early high scores with a combination of back hand reos and snaps before the conditions deteriorated substantially. Tom Antonie came in second by making the most of limited quality waves he caught with one notable big lip blast while Sam Corboy and Ned Shannon came in third and fourth. Sam and Ned are rapidly improving and are likely to push Grant and Tom in the final 3 events. Tom and Grant are equal in the rankings with a first and second each

The numbers in the Under 16 boys continue to grow and we have had 21 cadets surf over the first 2 comps. The standard was very high in the final in testing shifting 3 to 4 foot conditions. William Antonie linked a series of turns on some long inside runners to take out a close win over Billy Wells who was the standout cadet for the day with some aggressive backhand surfing, followed by Joel Wookey, Jamieson Kingston, Mitchell Jessop, Peter Morrison and Bayden Croft. In the aggregate Jamieson and Will are equal first and closely followed by Billy

The Under 13 boys showed a lot of determination and despite taking a number of the biggest close out sets of the day on the head (with James Easton breaking his leg rope) the boys all caught a couple of waves unassisted and will be significantly better for the experience. Will Antonie showed persistence to paddle deepest and with a couple of reos and carves came out on top with Nick Ford who surfed brilliantly coming in second, followed by Charlie Lucas, Rip Everret and James Easton. In the aggregate Will has a strong lead followed by Nick and James

In Open Division 2, which was run twice as Sam Wise was not scored in the first running, we have determined the most fair way to allocate results is to average the two finals, except for Sam who is given his result for the second running. Jakk Lyon came in first winning both finals with Liam Fowler coming in second overall with a second and fourth and Sam and Lachy Mason given equal third

In the other divisons the winners were;
Senior Mens - Cam Stynes, Masters - Mark Walker, Senior Masters - Peter Watts, Grand Masters - Luke Featherston and Legends - Evan Kingston

Thanks to all that helped to get the comp done in record time to almost beat the storms that hit Gunna mid afternoon - a particular thanks to all the committee as the assistance this year in getting the comps done is awesome - it is truely a team effort - a special mention to Morgan who puts in an enormous effort in the week leading up to the comp and on the day to make these comps what they are

The next Comp is to be scheduled for Sunday 12 February to enable us to run a comp in February as all other weekends are taken up and Saturday 11 February is scheduled for the Volcom comp which our club strongly supports and many of our members go in

We wish everyone a merry christmas and happy new year and let's hope the banks improve over the upcoming holiday period and we all get some epic summer back beach double ups and barrells!!!!

Cheers,
Tim and Nathan

November 2011 / Season 2011/12
PSC COMP 1 : EPIC WAVES means AWESOME SURFING!!!

The PSC 2011/12 got underway in demanding but fun 3 to 5 foot double up right handers at second carpark Gunnamatta. The waves held through all tides which was great to see and with over 100 competitors it was a busy day!!

In the Open division the standard was extremely high all day with big turns and innovation being rewarded. Caiden Fowler's vertical and speed attack was on display all day and he brought home a close victory over Liam Jolly who got the highest score in the final but just could not find a back up. Tim Dexter came in third with a wave a few seconds after the siren that may have given him victory and Grant Williams (still a junior) showed he will be one of the club's best surfers in the years to come with his first final's placing. Other open guys who ripped all day included Ryan (the Prez), Sean Winter, Cal Nicholson and Hayden Forrest

In the Women's final Sophie brought her power game with a few vertical hits in heavy pockets to control the final with the much improved Tabby coming in a close second to Vee placing third, Matilda fourth and Piper and Melissa Harrison fifth and sixth.

In a very close Juniors finals Tom Antonie with some great hacks and vertical climbs just edging out Grant Williams who was a stand out all day while Sam Corboy and Ned Shannon also ripped to take third and fourth.

Given the number of heats the contest was split to a right hand double up shorey down the beach for the Under 16 heats and the Under 13 boys Girls heats and finals - thanks to all that helped in getting this done and particularly Skip and Melissa.

We had 15 Under 16 boys compete which was a substantial increase from last year having about 5 to 8 - well done boys and welcome to the club!!! Jamieson Kingston took a strong win in the heavy double ups out front with some great rail carving and commitment with new boys Ryan O'Hanlon and Lachlan Robinson coming in 2 and 3rd, Will Antonie in fourth and Billy Wells in fifth.

The Girls are ripping with Matilda bringing home a solid victory with Tabby achieving her second second for the day over Bella Ford, then Piper and Alex Wake. It great to see the girls out surfing Gunna in demanding conditions and looking forward to the girls taking it to the next level over summer.

The Under 13 boys division had its very first competition in PSC history and the conditions were clearly testing. While Harry and Bernie went out with the boys for safety reason all the boys caught at least 2 waves by themselves (also did a few laps given the rip!!) and did themselves proud. William Antonie brought home a commanding victory with the smooth style of James Easton coming in second over Nick Ford third, Ripley Everrett fourth, Marlon Harrison (possibly the youngest ever competitor in PSC history at 7) coming in 5th, Rhys Stewart 6 and Charlie Lucas 7th.

In other divisions the winners were Open Division 2 - Matt Barrett, Senior Mens - Quintin, Masters - Wellsy, Senior Masters - Peter Watts, Grand Masters - Tim Antonie and Legends - Evan Kingston.

Hopefully the next comp on the 19th on November we will have another EPIC day as the race for the 2011/12 aggregate wins start to heat up - see ya then and for Open, Juniors and Cadets please pre-register by the Wednesday 16th.

November 2009 (Season 2009/10)

Gday everyone, well what a great way to start our contest year, good weather ,good waves, good turnout, and a dam good party afterwards. Our new comp format seemed well accepted and went reasonably smooth except our stuff up with the womens wich I promise we will make sure doesn’t happen again, sorry! It is definatley not as simple to run but it should only get easier and thanks to Tim's hard work before and during the comp we pulled it off. If only we could get a bank that’s good in all tides!

It was great to see once again the young crew dominating with some awesome surfing going down and at the other end of the scale the old boys got probably the best waves of the day for their finals and surfed them like grommets, well maybe not but they were ripping. A big thanks to everyone for helping out and we will see you all next Saturday for hopefully another great day!

Cheers,
Liam Mccafferty

June 2009 (Season 08/09)

G’day everyone!

Well another season done and dusted and its time to rug up and pull the booties out. Sorry about the short notice for the single fin comp to anyone who missed out but it was either run it on short notice or not have it at all, and it turned out to be one of the best days we have had for it over the years with perfect 2 to 3 ft waves and sunny weather and a reasonable turn out considering the late notice. It was a great fun day for all and some grea surfing going down and it was good to see even the groms ripping on the not so easy to ride old beasts. We were lucky enough to have Phil 'give me the mike' Newman commentating the event with special guest Buzzy [a.k.a Vok ] providing some humour for the day. I think those guys could stand in a room by themselves with a mike and talk all day. Thanks to everyone for helping out and to Cam Stynes for the DVD's for prizes.

It’s been a hard year to get good waves for the comps which I think has been the same for all vico comps this year but we did get 3 comps with good waves, and I think everyone still enjoyed themselves and there was still some sensational surfing going down at the other 3 comps. As always its pretty close between 4 or 5 guys for club champ which you will have to wait for till Preso Nite. It was great to see so many of the young guys dominating the open this year and even the cadets and juniors placing well in the open.

A big thanks to everyone for helping out at the comps especially Chuck and everyone who helped me at the comp desk when Chuck couldn't be there. Well done to everyone who made the club run this year, I had a ball and I hope you all did and I am looking forward to next year. Thanks and I'll see you all at Preso nite.

February 2009 (Season 08/09)

G'day everyone, hope you all had a good Chrissy and New Year and also hope you have all been getting some good waves.

Unfortunately the waves didn't do it for us at the second comp, but we needed to get it out of the way as it was the last weekend available until Feb and we really have done well in the past few years to have so many good waves for our comp days. Fortunately the conditions were a bit better than what the forecast had said and the waves were quite contestable, just good enough to see some top quality turns go down which was great to see in such trying conditions (1-2 Ft Onshore).
Well done to the finalists and to everyone who helped with packing up and judging the finals. It was a real blast (literally) with a hideous front hitting and left the judges having to judge from the safety of their cars. But thanks to everyone we pulled it off!

As you will have noticed we have scheduled a couple of comps on Sundays, due to a busy Victorian contest calendar and not wanting our comps to run on days that our members might have other comps on. This will also give us more dates as back up so we can run our comps in quality conditions (hopefully).
If anyone has any issues with comps on Sundays feel free to call me or Gav to voice your concerns.

See ya all at the next Comp!

October 2007 (Season 07/08)

Single Fin Contest

Why didn’t we run a normal comp!?!? Held in probably the best waves I can remember for a contest at Gunna in recent years, this year’s single fin classic was blessed with pumping 4-5foot offshore ripbowls at 1st carpark.
The waves were so good in fact, that the level of surfing in all divisions was similar to that of a normal contest anyway, with few chances to dig rails and make other random mistakes existing in the sensational conditions. Standout performances and moments as I saw them were:

- Mick Peirce’s barrel.
- Caiden’s barrel.
- Llyody’s barrel.
- Joel (and Tony) Reid’s consistent shredding.
- Texas all day.
- And Selim’s claims (he surfed alright too)

The perfect weather and waves wrapped up a great Australia Day for the club, and many enjoyed a beer and barbeque around the beach and clubhouse afterwards.

Jim Beam Surf Tag Report
The club placed 5th and 6th respectively in this year’s Jim Beam tag team. Our good surfers struggled in the more than contestable conditions, with Jack Winter flying the solo flag for the second team and scoring one of the highest totals of the day (for any club), making up virtually half of the team’s score. Apart from that there weren’t many highlights, although GT and Liam Jolly showed glimpses of PSC hope for a large number of spectators that came down to witness some excellent surfing. Big names such as Nic Muscroft, Jared Howse, Dion Atkinson and Jack Perry put in good performances for the other clubs but in the end it was the island team winning comfortably thanks to a consistent overall effort. Congratulations to those guys for an impressive team display.

The Challenge Is Back Again!
Along with the remaining 2 club contests and presentation night, the club is hosting Phillip Island Boardrider’s Club at Gunnamatta on April 5th for the interclub challenge. At the next club comp we will be taking names for divisions and looking to lock in a great surfer and supporter base for the event – everyone is welcome. By the sounds of what Redeye and the older committee members have planned, the afternoon and evening festivities should be a blast also.

'Frank, we also need to know who forcibly removed you from Redeye's 50th - not security, but by a lady friend!'

'From all reports our juniors have been ripping at the Portsea pub and Bay hotel all summer – special mentions must go to Fraser and Theodore’s Bay rats who constantly back up monster performances with epic Saturday nights at Portsea. Apparently they use the following line: 'There’s free accomodation for some lucky girl in my car just behind the pub.'

'Finally, just so his parents know, Caiden’s first appearance legally inside a pub was impressive, he spent little money and was constantly flexing his drinking muscles under the weight of copious free beverages and shots from his 'mates.'

October 2007 (Season 07/08)

How good have the waves been? After that stellar three week period in August that saw good A-frame banks all the way up and down the beach at Gunna, September has been a pretty consistent month for swell in the bay.

As per usual, Grand Final day presented amazing conditions and I’m sure those of you who don’t care about the footy (non-Geelong supporters and generally 'un-Australian' types) probably scored great waves after 2pm. Not me however - with the advent of the swell-net site (both a blessing and curse), I was lucky to share the surf with 30 of my closest friends for Hassle-Fest 2007 as everyone tried to find wave of the day before the first bounce.

Anyway, enough whinging. Hopefully the good run of waves we’ve been experiencing of late will carry on into the summer period and we’ll be able to run some good comps before Christmas. I thought last year we did pretty well with conditions, and think its pretty much fingers crossed for more of the same. Same as last year we will be using the forecasting sites (as frowned upon before – this time a blessing) basically up to 12pm on the Thursday before a contest day to make accurate calls on our website (www.psc.org.au) as to where and when the contest will be run.

Look forward to a fun year. Go Mick for the World Title, Go Cats in the AFL
and help us out with the judging on comp days!

May 2007 ( Cash Contest Report)

The 4th PSC comp saw some amazing waves on both the lefts and rights at 1st car park in the 3-4ft range. From memory, standout surfers on the day included Georgia Fish, the Forrest Brothers, Josh Hallam (again!), Adam Morris, Hydey (commiserations on the broken board – thanks for a little sniff at the title though!), Darty and the Winter brothers. Unfortunately a strong south west squall was enough to send you all running, and with not enough judges to brave the blustery conditions we were left to postpone 6 finals till the 5th comp. Strangely enough, the waves remained of a high quality and with a full high tide just on dark and a rising swell, Tim Dexter, Tim Howey, Stewy, Lachy, Liam and Ads enjoyed chunky 5-6ft bowls to ourselves – suckers.

After a lot of postponing and re-shuffling (sorry about that – Surfing Vic and other clashes), and a belated start we finally got some good weather and smoking 5ft rip-bowls at Gunna for the final aggregate contest. The 6 previous finals were held and the decision was made to go straight into the comp’s next heats as the dropping tide saw some amazing barrels along the banks. The usual suspects stood out with notable additions Alex Vrana, Tim Williams (and young Grant!) and Michael Doherty to the list. The highlight for me being the cadets proving some of our more senior members wrong and showing the high scoring potential of the rights – if only you just sat inside a bit guys! All results of comps 4 and 5 are with-held till presentation night. I’ve had a look at some of the aggregates – very close in a lot of divisions! See you all there for a fun night.

And here’s my rant... Massive thanks to Homer who has done a lot more than me this year (despite my 'director role'). We try and please you all at every comp but it can become quite tedious for reasons Reds mentioned earlier. Basically the way I see some of our problems being solved is as follows: -

JUDGING: We will have to have a roll call/attendance list or something similar and you will lose points from season aggregate for not judging a number of times during day. It’s always the same people helping in the tent. I don’t care how intimidated/slack you are (juniors and girls especially), get in there and help. All you have to do is talk amongst yourselves and give an opinion/pay attention and a fair result will be recorded – you want it in your heats, help in other heats. It is almost to the point where we need to pay a head judge for the days to ensure fair results. They can also help to teach inexperienced judges how to correctly judge. This is AGM stuff...

THE CRITERIA HAS CHANGED NOW and it is important for people to learn the new criteria so they can be better judges and contest surfers. All state performing/interested surfers should also check out the judging course (possibly at the clubhouse shortly) which can be subsidized by Surfing Vic for the club. - Heat Clashes/Late arivals : The format is on the left side of the white board as soon as it can be from the start of the day. Pay attention to it. It is VERY subject to change because we are a club, not the WCT and don’t have a set schedule (conditions/ turnout affecting this obviously). So pay attention. Any clashes are basically the responsibility of the individual although some circumstances are obviously tricky – help your fellow division members out with judging, etc to try and eliminate this.

Again, thanks for a great contest year. Massive thanks to all helpers and committee members, and especially Homer for doing pretty much everything. Buy us a beer at preso night! Lachy

February 2007 ( Cash Contest Report)

A super early start for the committee was put on hold at the 2007 PSC Cash Comp as everyone scrambled to get an early barrel or two.

If you were at the cash comp you will no doubt agree that the quality of waves, whilst slightly inconsistent throughout the day, was more than we could have hoped for. Clean, long, 4-5ft right hand walls were on offer for all competitors and the majority of waves included a great, shallow end section. The small entry fee was well worth the opportunity to have first Car Park like that with such little company, or so I thought after such an “action packed” and busy holiday period.

Contest wise the day ran smoothly. With only one bank being surfed and so many people keen to get out of the drizzly rain and help out there were quick changeover times for all heats.

The level of surfing was great, with notable mentions Rod Drake, Andrew Dart, Tim Dexter and of course GT (winner) in the open division. Probably the best waves of the day appeared around 3pm, right on time for the 16 and under final. Congratulations to Caiden for surfing well in that final and taking it out. Josh Hallam, Ryan Chalmers and Tim Williams all scored decent pits to ensure it wasn’t an easy victory. A new member to the club, Lisa Black scored some long rides to take a win in the women’s division. The days highlights included consistent performances from Andrew Hyde and Tex, Josh Hallam’s Barrel, Jack Winter’s surfing all day until the final, a sensational snap from Alex Vrana, Darty’s barrel and some very enthusiastic hassling towards the money rounds!

Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day, it was a fantastic turnout with great support from club members and sponsors alike to ensure the cash and prizes were worthy of the days surfing. A special mention also goes to Homer for putting in a massive effort in the tent all day.

Big thanks to all sponsors and those who donated a little extra for the day – Ozmosis, FCS, Volcom, PSC, Trigger Bros, Beans Surf, Odyssey 20:20.

January 2007
( 3rd Contest Report )

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all PSC members!

I'm sure you have all enjoyed the festive season as well as the awesome surf conditions we have been experiencing of late. If only the swell could push up and maybe some of these holiday makers could return to Melbourne.

Anyway, onto the third contest update (sorry about the timeliness...
Results were left at clubhouse for a while and I got lazy)

The remnants of a solid 6ft swell from the Friday prior to the 3rd contest ensured waves all day at the right hander at Rye. Unfortunately the swell seemed almost too large for the bank, and without the aid of a rip the quality of waves was slightly poorer than that of the 2nd contest despite the perfect conditions which greeted us.

Once again the cadets were put out first and showed some quality surfing. Special mentions go to the Forrest brothers and Mike Barber for some excellent early performances in the 4-5foot waves. The turnout for the cadets division this season has been unreal, with close to 25 competitors at the last two contests. Tim Williams surfed a great final to achieve his first win in that very competitive division.

Quality waves on both right-handers allowed the contest to be split with B-grade and female surfers enjoying the rip bowl right in front of the main stairs. Again, Fraser Ross dominated the B final with some great front side roundhouse cutbacks. Georgia Fish and both Sophies performed well in the women and junior girls division.

Standouts in the open division were Tim Dexter, Hydey, Micah Dawson, Chuck, Liam Jolly and Caiden Fowler. Congratulations to Timmy for his first win in opens with some quick, stylish snaps and even a couple of airs… I’m sure it won’t be his last.

Also congratulations to Caiden Fowler and Ryan Chalmers for stemming the domination of the junior division for a bit. Good to see the high standard of surfing in the junior division… just need a few more guys to turn up!

All the usual suspects surfed well in the older divisions also with surprisingly less whinging than normal!

Thanks heaps to everyone who helped out on the day and a big thanks to Chris from FCS for organising some great prizes and an awesome set up with the demo fins. Along with the support of our other sponsors, FCS are creating an awesome encouragement situation for the junior surfers in the club. Congratulations to everyone who won their divisions or received a prize for helping out. Much appreciated

April 2006 ( 3rd Contest Report )

Third PSC aggregate competition on Saturday 18th of March and the conditions of Gunnamatta second car park where not surprisingly ever-changing and challenging greeted with low tide on a building swell the day was set to be filled with action under the sunny sky.

With a good turnout it was the Juniors and Cadets out first to test the water with exciting performances through to the final where Alex Vrana took out his first junior final for the season followed closely be Liam Jolly. Cadets had the largest field of all season with Shannon Fry dominating his heats only to be tipped at the post by Josh Hallam in the final. Great to see the growing number of under 18 PSC members don’t forget to tell your mates about the next comp!

Open A-grade had a variable mixed bag of conditions during the initial rounds with rips changing by the heat, Chuck Nairn, 05 Senior Men’s champ won the final, in the water against first-time season 06 finalist’s Napalm and Wardo. This result allowing the doors wide open for this season’s champion to be decided in the next two competitions, go to results for this season’s results.

Women and Junior Girls divisions had a solid presence with Soph Cizek winning her first comp of the season after placing 2nd in the previous two comps, followed by Kylie Nichols. Junior Girl’s heats were run, however the final was postponed until another date TBC, due to increasingly difficult conditions.

B-Grade renegade Sam Grant has taken the season by storm with an unbeatable 3/3 wins for his fairytale first season with the Peninsula Surfriders Club, only too closely followed in second place Sean Tuckett who has been determined as ever to gain a win.

Senior Men’s saw another new podium winner for the season with Craig Watson giving a solid performance in chunky conditions, with Burto taking his second 2nd place keeping the final competitions hot under pressure for would-be champ.

Selim Dalvean
won his first Masters competition with arch nemesis Homer in second and Scotty Pippin third. Senior Master’s sole competitor Tim Howey took first place. Grand Masters show down saw all-star performances amongst the young fit athletes, with President Redeye sweeping the win from under Ronnie in the final with an acclaimed barrel highly scored to seal the deal.

These results are the last to be published, as always the final two competition results are kept a secret till presentation night (15th July – Buy tix now!). The next comp will be on the 20th of May meeting at 7am no names taken after 7.30am, Gunnamatta.

Please check our website regularly as forecasts for scheduled comps have been made and contests cancelled due to the accuracy of weather conditions, decisions will always be posted on the home page. See everyone in the frosty water, keep rippin.

February 2006

Saturday Jan 28th saw excellent performances in and out of the water at Gunna 1st Car Park, with the comp equipment set-up and ready to role by 7am giving a precedent for ALL COMPETITORS to arrive before 7.30 to start the heats early. With the rip running through the left hand bank in 3-5ft waves solid scores were made through out the day with outstanding performances in the Junior final where Adam Morris nailed a massive front-side no handed air which put him into 1st position followed closely by Sean Winter.

Highlights also included the beginning of the JUNIOR WOMENS division, which was a huge success thanks to competitor's keenness to be apart of the club comps, Melissa & Mark Harrison and Skip for running the heats and finals, we look forward to this division to growing into the future with everyone’s support. Congratulations to Sian Lewis for winning the first final of the junior women’s comp of PSC! Tracey Browne won the open women’s division.

The B-Grade lads were out in force with the unstoppable Sam Grant taking out his second win in as many comps starting his season off strong, with Matt Barret and Dave Tunne close behind. Cadets saw a new wave of talent in the PSC field with S.Fry winning both his heat and the final with solid power surfing throughout the day and Nick Hamilton also giving a good performance in 2nd position.

Senior Men's final was high paced action with all finalist's keen and able to rip the junky waves apart, but in the end it was Shannon Creasey who rose about in what looked like ideal conditions for the goofy footer.

The Masters, Senior Masters and Grand Masters heats where held at 2nd car park in what was described as sucky rights with multiple distractions and floating obstacles in some of the competitor's way. Congrats to winners: Tim Antonie, Luke Featherstone and Scratch.

Open A division had a strong field of young surfers showing they've got what it takes to make finals, with four surfers under 20 y.o in the final. Mark Walker won with solid power surfing and with a couple of canned medicine under his belt on the left-hander. The Winter Brothers followed in second and third with high performance surfing on different banks making for a non-stop action packed final.

Special thanks to Contest Director and Assistant Robbie Warden and Lauchlan McDonald, committee members, especially Skip and Claire Easton, Redeye, Ash Griffin and JP Ricca, everyone who helped out judging, these competitions are all about team work, as everyone's time is voluntary please don't be shy to lend a hand next time.

June 2005

4th of June saw the end of the 2004-05 Season with Presentation Night a black tie occasion in fine dining form at the Atrium, Safety Beach, where over 140 members and friends enjoyed a top night of food, entertainment (The Exotics), prizes and the odd beverage here and there.

A huge thanks to committee members for getting the fantastic night together, notably President Barn and Treasurer Ronnie, who both did an outstanding job making it all happen behind the scenes.

Congratulations to Tim Birnie for taking out the 2004-05 PSC title once again! Senior Men's winner Chuck Nairn for not only tearing all year but also being an important committee member showing that helping out improves surfing performance. Most improved junior Alex Vrana has an exciting future ahead, taking 4th place in his division while making it through many heats in the open division. Encouragement award went to young gun Sian Lewis who came 5th in the Open Women's division and various other achievements throughout the year at age 16. An extremely tight finish in the B-Grade Division with Ben Fox 2nd and Robbie Warden taking out the coveted title after an exciting season.

Other acknowledgements such as Single Fin Classic organiser Mark Howey awarded Best Clubman, Craig Watson Best Committee Man and Lauchlan McDonald receiving the Best Judge award, congratulations guys.

Thanks to everyone for a great season, with the best waves and attitudes seen in years. AGM is on the 4th of July, come along and get involved as well as a discounted membership.

May 2005

Hi and thanks to all members for an excellent season, its been my first year as contest director and found the role full filling and enjoyable. With near perfect waves at every competition at a range of different locations making it easy and interesting for all divisions in the high performance conditions.

The final two competitions saw great medium size waves at home (Gunna 1st CP) with brilliant sunny Victorian weather to keep everyone down the beach for day showing the true spirit of club competitions between friends, and close final results for aggregate positions in all divisions making for a breath-taking preso night to come.

A BIG thank-you and congratulations to the committee for all the support and huge hours volunteered to get all the professional-style events and clubhouse to happen so smoothly, without the unselfish manner of these and the other people in the club we wouldn't be recognised as the 'best club in the world', something every member should be so proud of. Also thanks to BMC my contest director for his funky style of organisation with his humourous personality always good for a laugh, Brooksy for great music, Lachy McDonald and Matt Barret keen to lend a hand in running the comps when I'm busy and doing a great job at it, also Shannon for his fantastic work on the club website, which is our best form of up-to-date info about all events.

A memorable highlight from the season was definitely the PSC Single Fin Classic, which showcased the history of our coast with many legends, past and current members and friends enjoying a day at Point Leo with ideal 4-6ft offshore conditions at Suicide Point sharing past memories, dusting off old boards hidden under houses for the past 25 years and showing grommets of today how it used to be done made it an unforgettable event with a great night back at the clubrooms to match it.

I look forward to seeing everyone - members, partners, mates for an awesome night celebrating another top year at the stylish Atrium with great entertainment, food & drinks with a bus running around at the end of the night for a safe ride home.

Keep rippin

March 2005

G'day to all members, by now the water's chilled out and the clouds have come out but still the PSC spirit drives on through the winter season with another four exciting club comps to look forward to.

Sunday Feb 6th marked our 3rd Aggregate Comp with good waves all day at Gunna 1st car park with a great view over the beach from the new spectator friendly lookout-tent location.

The A-grade division saw Gary Taylor backing his win at the Volcom comp the previous day with another solid win in the tough afternoon conditions. Tim Dexter also came through with his second win for the season in the junior division followed closely by Ross McDonald. In the Senior Mens division Burto took out his first win of the season in a solid tussle with eventual second place Shannon Creasy and Tex Walker third. In the B-Grade Ben Fox had the bag of tricks in the messy conditions to take first. Cadets saw Josh Brown win his first aggregate comp of the season with Adam Morris coming a close third. The women's division saw an ever growing turnout but it was the consistent Tracy Browne taking out her second win of the season. The over 40's had another excellent turnout with Redeye taking out grand masters, Andrew Dell winning senior mens and Jason Agosta breaking his third place spree with a win.

Now with the end of the season coming to a close with only two aggregate comps left, no more results will be announced to keep you all in suspense until this year's presentation night, which is set to be massive. Ratings points will be posted on the club website to keep updated.

The PSC Single Fin Classic is winding up to be a great event on the April 30 with past and present members welcome to participate in a truly historic event. Boards are to be of the 1970's era, those that aren't, will not be able to be ridden in the competition. A party will be held that afternoon at the clubrooms with great entertainment and special guests, all in special 70's gear.

Next club comp is on the 19th of March, sign in is at 7:00am, thanks to all contributing members in the club who help out throughout the day's of competition your hands make light work for organisers and committee members who really appreciate it. I hope everyone has a fun, happy and safe Easter and enjoy what will be another huge Rip Curl Pro event at Torquay.

January 2005

On Saturday 4th of December we completed our 2nd aggregate comp in fun conditions with warm and sunny weather and light offshore winds. The 1-3ft swell hitting good left and right banks at 1st car park Gunnamatta provided great contestable waves throughout most of the day. The morning saw over 95 competitors rock up ready for action, with OPEN A surfers going out first to test the conditions, proving the right choice was made with high scores being posted throughout the round.

The women's division had a great turnout with semi-finals run on the lefthander with plenty of ripping rides and fun had by all. The final was taken out by reigning club champ and WQS surfer Tracy Browne. Congratulations to all girls who competed. The juniors and cadets showcased their talents with awesome surfing in ideal grommet conditions, congratulations to Tim Dexter (juniors) and Adam Morris (cadets) both posted high scoring rides in the finals to win their divisions.

Masters divisions had another large turnout, with all the older fellas having a good day down the beach, and showing their true competitive spirit in and out of the water (sorry about the flags). Open B grade final was held on the left hand peak thanks to Jason Owens and BMC for clearing the area in such a discrete manner. With stiff competition and inconsistent waves the fight for waves was hot. The Open A final saw high performance surfing matched with strategic surfing with a distinct shore break and outer bank as the tide came in. It was extremely close with GT and Tim Birnie going wave for wave through to the shore, however it was speedy Tim who just took it out by less than a point. Thanks to the committee, the president and everyone for all the help and support, also to NEMO for the use of the skimboards, the grommets were kept busy throughout the day on the shorey.

Congratulations to Tim Dexter, Jack Winter and Alan Brooks who competed in the Balin Junior Pro at Gunnamatta, the lads represented our coast with great skill and style. Junior and Open state rounds are being run throughout February and March, all members should compete and support each other at these events, entry forms can be found on the Surfing Victoria website.

Next club comp is on Sunday 6th of February signing in at 7am at Gunnamatta 1st car park. This is due to the Volcom Tour competition which is being held on Saturday 5th which is a free event at Gunnamatta starting at 7am, with plently of prizes and giveaways, which I encourage all members to compete in age divisions cadets, junior and pro am (open).

Open B grade final was held on the left hand peak thanks to Jason Owens and BMC for clearing the area in such a discrete manner. With stiff competition and inconsistent waves the fight for waves was hot. Thanks to WattoÕs large stomach surfboard, for without it I probably wouldnÕt have caught a wave.

The Open A final saw high performance surfing matched with strategic surfing with a distinct shore break and outer bank as the tide came in. It was extremely close with GT and Tim Birnie going wave for wave through to the shore, however it was speedy Tim who just took it out by less than a point.

Thanks to the committee, the president and everyone for all the help and support, also to NEMO for the use of the skimboards, the grommets were kept busy throughout the day on the shore breaks. DonÕt forget Thursday night training at 5.30pm 1st CP Gunna, everyone is welcome.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all. To keep up to speed logon to the PSC website for all the latest news and events.
