EVENT REGISTRATION

Event Registration

  1. You must register for each event to be eligible to enter. ( And a current Member to enter all PSC Aggregate contests )
  2. Event registration for all events is via [ liveheats.com/psc ] and will open the week before the event and close 5pm the day before the schedule contest, no excuses for late registrations.
  3. Late entries will not be accepted into any event. Our scheduling is based on who is registered to compete, so if there is a late or forgotten entry, it really messes up the event. Event registrations are conveniently all online through liveheats.com and will be made available with enough time before each event.
  4. If you register for an event but are a ‘no-show’, without a written excuse to the committee, you will be penalised 100 aggregate points, as this creates inefficiencies in our scheduling and wastes all club members and competitor’s time.
  5. If you’re injured and are unable to compete in the event through injury or illness, you will not be able to enter the event or aquire any aggregate points towards that season.

JUDGING

Judging

  1. The club will designate a head judge each season, they will work alongside the contest director
  2. The Head Judge will have the ultimate call on all heats that they observe within the tent. No heats will be started until the Head Judge makes their decision on all scores across the previous heat. If the Head Judge isn’t available, then the Contest Director/Directors will make this call.
  3. This Contest Season, we will focus on up-skilling our judging capability. When members are judging please pay attention to the surf, leave mobile phones alone, spectators will be asked to move away from the judge’s area whilst heats are in progress, as head judge will not be checking rash vest colours.
  4. IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL PSC COMPETITORS
All surfing competitors must judge a heat after they’ve surfed a heat, otherwise we cannot run our events. Anyone who skips on judging will be penalised 100 aggregate points.

Heat Judging

  1. Each heat is judged by a minimum of 3 judges.
  2. Efforts will be made to ensure that no judge has a vested interest in the heat they are judging (this includes not judging family members or heats from the same division a judge surf in).
  3. Judges will remain judging for the entire duration of a heat.
  4. Judges will score each surfer’s waves on a scale of 0.1 to 10, broken into one-tenth increments ( eg. 7.3 ).

Criteria

  1. Surfers must perform to the judging key elements to maximize their scoring potential. Judges analyse the following major elements when scoring waves.
    •   Commitment and degree of difficulty
    •   Innovative and progressive manoeuvres
    •   Combination of major manoeuvres
    •   Variety of manoeuvres
    •   Speed, power and flow
  2. It is important to note that the emphasis of certain elements is contingent upon the location and the conditions on the day, as well as changes of conditions during the day.
  3. The following scale will be used to describe a Ride that is scored:
    •   0–1.9 = Poor
    •   2.0–3.9 = Fair
    •   4.0–5.9 = Average
    •   6.0–7.9 = Good
    •   8.0–10.0 = Excellent.
  4. A wave will only be scored by judges when both of the following conditions are met for a wave to be considered ridden:
    •   The surfer’s hands leave the rail in an attempt to stand up (including grab rail) AND
    •   The surfer is propelled forward by the wave.

Interference Rule

NOTE: interference rules and penalties are currently under review, so the following is a guide only.
  1. Wave possession or right of way in these situations will vary slightly under the following categories as determined by the nature of the contest venue. Basically, it is the responsibility of the judge to determine which Surfer has the inside position based on whether the wave is a superior right or left, but never on which Surfer is first to their feet.
  2. EXCEPTION: If at the initial point of take-off neither the right nor left can be deemed superior, then the right of way will go to the first Surfer who makes a definite turn in their chosen direction
  3. With two peaks, there will be cases where one swell will have two separate, defined peaks far apart that eventually meet at some point. Although two Surfers may each have inside position on those respective peaks, the Surfer who is first to their feet shall be deemed to have wave possession and the second Surfer must give way by cutting back or kicking out before hindering the right of way Surfer.
  4. If two Surfers stand at the same time on two separate peaks that eventually meet, then:
    (i) If they both give way by cutting back or kicking out, so that neither is hindered, there will be no penalty.
(ii) If they collide or hinder one another, a Surfer will be penalized by the judges if either or both indicate aggression at the point of hindrance.
(iii) If neither Surfer gives way by exiting the Ride and both share responsibility for the confrontation, then a double interference will be called. Both Surfers will score a zero for that wave, and each of their second scoring waves are halved.
  5. Interference can be called for drop-ins, intentional paddling interferences and snaking if a judge feels that the interfering surfer has hindered the scoring potential for the surfer deemed to have right of way.
  6. On the judges score sheet (paper based), interference is marked as a triangle around the score of the interfering surfer (the surfer who dropped in) with an arrow pointing to the surfer’s score who was interfered on.
  7. If the interference was for a paddling or snaking (where the interfering surfer may not register a score for the wave), then the triangle is placed after the last score currently recorded for the surfer with an arrow pointing to the surfer’s score who was interfered on.
  8. An interference penalty will apply if at least 2 of 3 judges call interference; the penalty will then apply to all 3 judges sheets.
  9. The interfering surfer will lose 50% of their 2nd highest wave score. The wave that the interference was called on by the majority of the judges will count in the final tally as a zero.
  10. If this Surfer incurs another interference penalty during the same heat, their best wave score will be halved also.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The following sets out a model for the delivery of Peninsula Surfriders Development Program. Peninsula Surfriders Club have identified the need to ‘up-skill’ members able to perform at the highest of levels of surfing with particular focus being on participation at the Australian Boardriders Battle Annual Event. From this it has been identified that there was a distinct need to take High Performance Surf Coaching and Development at PSC beyond what is being currently done.

We believe that with early identification of members, setting goals for them and tailoring programs to their specific outcomes within their development will only help our club achieve better results in team surfing at the highest level.

The overarching outcome of this strategy for our club is that we maintain a commitment to making our identified talented athletes the best they can be and provide them with every opportunity to reach their full potential in their surfing careers. It is hoped by achieving this that it reduces the barriers for them to realise their potential and achieve greater success.

PSC Development Program Selection Process
Each year, results from season aggregate will determine whom PSC will select/invite to participate in the PSC Development Program. The program, supported by the PSC Committee and Board, aims to provide further opportunities for individuals. Our aim is to enhance participant’s skills and attitudes within a team based surfing format, honing these skills to be unleashed on a State and National platform.

Places will be offered as follows:
•   Cadets: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th from PSC aggregate
•   Junior Men: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th from PSC aggregate
•   Junior Women: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th from PSC aggregate
•   Women: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th from PSC aggregate

Where a participant declines the year-long invitation, the next ranked surfer in that respective category will be offered a position.

For talent identified outside this criteria there may be an opportunity to participate at select sessions where full attendance can't be achieved. This will be at the discretion of the coaches.

ABB & STATE TEAM QUALIFICATION

The program, supported by the PSC Committee and Board, aims to provide further opportunities for individuals. Our aim is to enhance participant’s skills and attitudes within a team based surfing format, honing these skills to be unleashed on a State and National platform.
